Context

Nink is an experimental visual project born from shared passions between two friends: the fragrance and poetry of ordinary images, the underground echo of memories. Loving to lean on the edge of the windows through which these moments were lived, imagined, feeling the wind that blew through them. The fascination for the freedom of rhythm on which these moments dance and blend in our minds. The desire to capture the blur of a fleeting thought through images.

We first wanted to explore printed formats from videos, particularly flipbooks, to control the cadence of these moments in our hands, through an object. Then, because designing apps was what I knew how to do, an app took over to capture, blend and dive more easily into these images — developed as a duo with a developer, both driven by the same passion for the subject.

Flipbook extraction

Concept

The app lets you capture, watch, and anonymously share short visual sequences — sometimes abstract, sometimes raw — that can be layered on top of each other. Sequences are presented in a GIF-like loop and can be controlled by touch to linger wherever you want, at whatever pace you choose. Collect your moments, blend them together, but also browse anyone else’s, guided by chance.

Ninks can be layered using different blend modes, like a double exposure, creating new sequences: this evokes the way memories meet and merge in our minds, as poetic synapses.

Ninks can be published anonymously to the global gallery for everyone to see. The gallery uses an algorithm to surface the best content at the top while ensuring regular renewal. This project was built for collaboration and the collective, while deliberately staying detached from the individuals sharing these images — a possible bridge to stray moments, a kind of collective intimacy. Ultimately, a dream one might have had.

My role

As the project founder, I led it end to end: art direction, product design, task structuring and breakdown, testing and user research management, short- and long-term product roadmap definition, through to production and launch on the stores.

Product and iOS boards

Process

A first MVP version was built around a specific goal: being able to scrub through the sequence by touch and test blend modes, to see if the feeling came close to a flipbook in digital form. The feeling clicked right away — enough to confirm the direction and keep going.

The design was then laid out through functional storyboards, defining screen flows and key interactions — from capture to publishing. The nink viewing experience was also reworked across several iterations, particularly around caption display and time markers.

The app was then beta-tested via TestFlight, with a deliberately varied panel beyond just technical profiles, to confront the project with different perspectives. Each tester freely shared their feedback: discoveries, bugs, usage patterns, feature ideas.

With my co-developer, this feedback was then sorted on a shared board — dismissed, considered for short-term or long-term — before being turned into tickets once retained.

After these various phases of testing and iteration, the app was finally launched on the App Store.
